A character is LGBTQ, and doing their best to hide it, either due to potential consequences such as a Homophobic Abhor Crime, being arrested and jailed, or Gayngst over whether they'll be acknowledged for who they are.
May involve The Beard, Secretly Gay Activity, a Secret Relationship, Flying Under the Gaydar, or any number of tropes pertaining to The Masquerade. Can lead into a Coming-Out Story, or being Forced Out of the Closet.
Very much Truth in Television of course, especially in highly religious countries. There are still places where you can be executed for your sexual orientation if you're anything other than heterosexual and cisgender.

How many Americans do you think are gay or lesbian? Take a minute, think about it, and take your best speculate.
You’re probably wrong.
Like most of us, you may have overestimated the population. “The American common estimates on average that 23% of Americans are gay or lesbian,” notes the Gallup polling company. The table below shows the responses that Gallup received in and then in to the doubt, “Just your best speculate, what % of Americans today would you tell are gay or lesbian?”
Only 9% of Americans correctly estimate the size of the gay and woman loving woman population at somewhere under 5%. Why are we so far off? Part of the explanation comes from people’s misunderstanding of social statistics. We construct similar mistakes when we estimate the size of racial and ethnic populations. A repressed homosexual or bi-sexual who may or may not 'come out of the closet' and disclose their sexuality. They may be 'outed' against their will.
Also refers to a queer or bi-sexual who is experiencing self denial.
